Common questions
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. The app has no microphone. It speaks to you, and it never listens, so no audio is captured and no recording is ever made.
Two things do leave your phone, and neither is audio. Once you sign in with Apple, your work (moments, notes, words and rehearsals) lives in your account on servers in Canada so another device can open them. And when you build a rehearsal, the two lines you type — who you are speaking to, and what it is about — go to the model that writes the script, because that is what writes it. We do not store those two lines. See the Privacy Policy.
Will this change how I speak?
We make no claim about that, and we never will. Stuttering Recovery is a rehearsal room. You run the conversation once, alone, before you have it for real. It is not medical care, and it is not a substitute for working with a licensed speech-language pathologist.
Many people who stutter do not want to be repaired. This app is built to respect that. It counts the moments you entered. It never scores how you sounded.
How much time does it take?
About five minutes a day: one rehearsal, or one moment logged. You can choose five, ten, or fifteen minutes during onboarding. A rehearsal is shorter than the conversation you are rehearsing.
How does the app measure progress?
After a real conversation you answer three questions. Did you say what you wanted to say? Did speaking get in the way? Did you change any words?
That is all. There is no fluency score, no severity rating and no count of blocks or repetitions. Every number in the app counts something you did, and the answers are your own judgement of the conversation, not a clinical measure.
What is Quick Prep?
Three lines to read in about fifteen seconds, just before you speak: notice it, say what you mean, keep going. There is no microphone, no timer and no score. Open it from Today or from Rehearse.
What is unison mode?
The app says the line at the same time as you. Most people who stutter already know this effect from speaking along with someone else. Turn it on with the Unison switch in a rehearsal.
My rehearsal script looks short and generic
That happens when your phone cannot reach our server. The app writes a short local script instead, so the room still opens the night before a conversation you are dreading. Check your connection and build it again.
I paid but the app is still locked
Open the You tab and tap Restore purchases. If that does not work, email us.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open your device Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Stuttering Recovery. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Refunds are handled by Apple.
How much does it cost?
3 days free, then $79.99 a year, or $9.99 a month. There is no free version.
How do I delete my data?
Open the You tab and tap Delete account and data. This removes your account and all your moments, rehearsals, difficult words and onboarding answers from both your phone and our servers. It cannot be undone.
If your phone cannot reach our servers, nothing is deleted and the app tells you so. Try again when you have a signal.
I want to work with a real speech-language pathologist
That is a good idea, and the app is not a replacement for it. In the United States, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association keeps a public directory of certified clinicians. In the United Kingdom, the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists keeps a similar one. Your doctor can also refer you.
Accessibility
The app supports Dynamic Type and both light and dark appearance. If something is hard to use with VoiceOver or at a large text size, please tell us — we count that as a bug.
